Our Thematic Areas

Focusing on high-impact domains where scientific research meets global health urgency.

Which areas do we prioritize to reduce the burden of infectious diseases?

These thematic areas are embedded in a One Health approach and focus on reducing the burden of infectious diseases in Kenya and the African continent through equitable, feasible, and sustainable interventions. Given their interconnectedness, we develop integrated interventions that explore their relationships even when a project targets one area.

Global Health Security
Priority #1

Global Health Security

The world faces emerging and reemerging infectious diseases with pandemic potential. Localized disease surveillance at the grassroots level and community-led mitigation are often neglected.

Localized surveillance enables early detection, prevention, and control of infectious diseases—tracking zoonotic cross-over points and generating data for rapid policy-making, contextualized interventions, and integration with wider surveillance systems.

Infection Prevention
Priority #2

Infection Prevention & Control (IPC)

Sustaining IPC at facility and community levels is challenging in Kenya and other LMICs. We study systemic barriers and behavioral drivers to co-design contextual interventions with communities.

Evidence guides ownership- and sustainability-focused IPC models, establishing centers of excellence across Kenya to generate strategies adaptable to other low- and middle-income countries.

Antimicrobial Resistance
Priority #3

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)

AMR is multifaceted and demands multidisciplinary, One Health interventions. We focus on overlooked drivers and scalable solutions.

Human & Animal Health-Seeking Behaviors

Exploring systemic drivers of behaviors and co-designing community-owned interventions for positive change.

Primary Healthcare Stewardship

Designing AMS interventions at first points of care; partnering with CHWs to build capacity and address sub-optimal practices.

Growing the AMR Talent Pool

Expanding multi-professional capacity via education (primary to tertiary), curricula integration, and self-determination pathways into AMR careers.
